Teterboro putting up a buffer; Moves to avert overruns
Posted: November 23rd, 2009

Teterboro Airport is setting up collapsible concrete to stop wayward jets from overrunning the facility's runways.

The Port Authority moved forward Thursday to form a 352-foot-long cushion between Runway 1-19's southern end and Redneck Avenue in Moonachie, agency officials said.

Redneck Avenue, a busy road that runs close to the runway, will be moved about 600 feet to the east.

The Port Authority, which operates the airport, will spend $39 million on the project after a series of near-misses and runway overruns that concerned airport officials and advocates.

"This system is designed to prevent potential tragedies by keeping airplanes from overshooting the runway," said Ron Marsico, a Port Authority spokesman.

In 2005, a jet ran off a runway at Teterboro, hitting cars and a warehouse on Route 46. In the last five years, federal aviation officials have been called to investigate more than twice as many safety incidents at Teterboro than at John F. Kennedy or La Guardia airports.
