ABSTRACT

Wilson Felder, director of the FAA Technical Center, said the NextGen project's economic impact will be national, not just local. "We are here to further the development of a new air transportation system for the U.S.," he said. From an economic development standpoint, FAAs major concern is "to ensure that air transportation does not hinder economic growth," he said.

DESIGNED TO BE the nerve center for the development of the Federal Aviation Administration's Next Generation air transportation system, or NextGen, a South Jersey research park is expected to attract aircraft manufacturers, avionics companies and others in related industries, including Lockheed Martin and Boeing, according to industry insiders.

In September, construction work is expected to begin at the site of the proposed Aviation Research and Technology Park, near Atlantic City. The park will occupy 58.2 acres provided by the William J. Hughes Technical Center at the Atlantic City International Airport, in Egg Harbor, and the surrounding towns of Galloway and Hamilton.

More significantly, the project will forge collaborations between the scientists and engineers at the center and academicians from Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, in nearby Galloway's Pomona section. Herman Saatkamp, Stockton College's president, is prepar- ing plans for new courses, staff hires and joint research projects with the park's tenant companies, and to play catalyst in maximizing the economic multiplier effect on the neighborhood and beyond.
