RIC parking-lot workers warned of layoffs; New vendor probably would hire most of the 112 affected employees
Posted: September 9th, 2008

The company that manages parking lots, ticket booths and shuttle buses at Richmond International Airport will likely lose its contract and has notified all 112 employees they could be without jobs.

Central Parking System, based in Nashville, Tenn., last week filed notice with the state of the potential layoffs later this year. State and airport officials have said they believe Central Parking employees will be eligible to work for the new vendor, Standard Parking, which has headquarters in Chicago and offices in Arlington County.

"This is not one of those cases when we anticipate everybody is going to lose their jobs," said Felecia McClenny, central region director for the Governor's Office for Workforce Development. Employers with more than 100 full-time workers must file notice with the state when mass layoffs or closures are pending.

The Capital Region Airport Commission voted this year to change companies after it opened the contract up for bid, said Troy Bell, director of marketing and air-service development at the airport.

The commission thought Standard Parking offered a more competitive bid, Bell said.

A final management contract with Standard Parking has not been signed, but it expects to take over operations by the end of the year, said Michael K. Wolf, executive vice president and chief administrative officer.

It is likely that most of the Central Parking System employees will be hired by Standard Parking, Wolf said. The hiring process includes an interview, background check and drug screen.
