The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has announced that it is piloting millimetre wave technology at Miami International Airport.
The technology has already been installed at Los Angeles, John F. Kennedy in New York, Baltimore-Washington, Denver, Albuquerque, Ronald Reagan Washington, Detroit, Dallas/Fort Worth and Phoenix Sky-Harbor airports.
Millimetre wave technology is being suggested as an alternative to pat-down security checks. It can detect threatening items such as weapons and explosives without the need for physical contact. The privacy of passengers is protected through remote viewing of the images and blurring of faces.
There are currently two millimetre wave machines at Miami Airport and four more will be installed this year.
