The Jamaican government is planning to create a network of airports as part of its multimodal transport policy, government information service JIS reported.
One of the projects is the rehabilitation of the Boscobel aerodrome, located 10km west of the Ocho Ríos tourist town in northern Jamaica. Improvement works are already been carried out, an official from JIS told BNamericas. Currently, Boscobel is a domestic aerodrome with no fueling facilities or night flights.
"It will be the third international port of entry into Jamaica [and] it will be equipped with all the necessary immigration and customs [facilities]," transport and works minister Michael Henry said. The minister added that he is following an international approach to ensure Jamaica moves from having air service agreements to an open skies policy.
The multimodal transport program involves the development of road, sea, rail and air services. The program includes developing the Vernamfield aerodrome in central Clarendon parish and the creation of logistics centers. Vernamfield aerodrome has been inactive since the US air force's lease to operate it expired in 1999.
Henry was speaking at the inauguration of a new domestic terminal at the Sangster international airport in Montego Bay and the launch of Jamaica Air Shuttle, a new domestic inter-island air service.
