Patrick T. Abeln, director of aviation at El Paso International Airport, announced his retirement, effective Dec. 31, after 10 years of service with the city of El Paso.

Abeln will remain on retainer through March 31.

Abeln, who had been battling cancer, said he plans on staying in El Paso.

"My decision to retire is based on the fact that after 35 years in the aviation industry, I am ready to do what I've simply not had time for. I look forward to writing, enjoying life and spending time with my family."
