Control tower expected to boost airport traffic, profile
Posted: August 14th, 2009

Roy Sieger might just have the best view in Flagler County.

As director of the Flagler County Airport, Sieger has had a front- row seat to watch the new airport control tower take shape at the former Navy airfield. In fact, on his first day on the job about five months ago, the first wall of the new facility went up.

Now the tower is almost complete and county officials will formerly dedicate the new facility Monday with a ribbon cutting at 3 p.m. at the airport administration building. "We just passed (Federal Aviation Admnistration) inspection," Sieger said earlier this week.

The next step, he said, is for the FAA to sign a contract with Robinson Aviation, the company that will be providing the controllers for the tower.

Sieger said the tower could be controlling aircraft by theof the month.

Even if it takes a bit longer before the tower is fully operational, Sieger said the need for controlled airspace in Flagler County has been clear for a while. "We've been one of the busiest airports in the state of Florida," he said.

The tower will bring an increased safety factor to flight operations and will make using the county facility more efficient, Sieger said.

The tower's airspace will extend out in a radius of four nautical miles and up to 1,500 feet, according to Sieger. From the six-sided top of the tower, which sits eight stories above the ground on the airport's northeast side, controllers have a perfect view of the airport and its environs. Plus, the tower itself is expected to boost flight operations at the field.
