Alaska, Horizon pare number of flights out of PDX
Posted: September 19th, 2008

SUMMARY: Travel | The cuts are part of Alaska Air Group's plans to slash its work force

Alaska Airlines, offering more details on its layoffs and cutbacks, said Monday that it will cut 17 percent of its Portland flights, from 35 departures a day to 29.

Horizon Air, which like Alaska is owned by the Alaska Air Group, will eliminate 28 percent of its flights out of Portland International Airport, from 94 departures a day to 68.

On Friday, Alaska Air Group announced plans to reduce capacity 8 percent, compared with a year ago, starting Nov. 9. It also said it will slash its work force by 9 percent to 10 percent --from 850 to 1,000 jobs. The company said higher fuel prices and a softening economy prompted the moves.

Alaska Airlines spokeswoman Marianne Lindsey said the airline would make the following changes to its schedule at PDX:

* Drop one Denver flight, to two daily.

* Trim one Las Vegas flight, to seven daily.

* Cut two flights to San Jose, Calif., to four daily.

* Drop one Sacramento flight, to four daily.

* Eliminate the flight to Orlando, Fla.

Horizon spokeswoman Jen Boyer said that although the airline is dropping about a fourth of its flights out of Portland, the carrier's shift to larger, more fuel-efficient jets will mean only about a 10 percent reduction in seats.
