Airlines reducing service at Stewart; Delta, JetBlue plan to cut some of their daily flights beginning in September
Posted: July 8th, 2008

Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways plan to reduce service at Stewart International Airport in Newburgh in early September. The moves come less than three weeks after AirTran Airways said it would quit flying to Newburgh on Sept. 3.

And it's less than three months after Stewart lost its Skybus flights when that carrier abruptly shut down April 5.

JetBlue spokeswoman Alison Eshelman said two flights would be cut, the one daily trip to West Palm Beach and one of the two flights to Orlando. That would leave two daily trips to Florida, one to Orlando and one to Fort Lauderdale, from Stewart.

"Those flights are seasonal `pulldowns,' " Eshelman said. But she said the cutbacks are deeper this time because of escalating fuel costs.

Still, Eshelman held out the possibility that service might be increased if demand warrants. While September and October are slower months for travel, business picks up to Florida destinations in the winter.

Delta Air Lines plans to trim service to three daily flights from four currently. It operates nonstop service between Newburgh and its hub at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
