Quixote Traffic Corporation (QTC) — of Palmetto, FL introduces its AxleLight™ Classification Kits, a new, non-intrusive method of counting and classifying vehicles. AxleLight fills a need identified by many state DOTs and traffic engineers for a non-intrusive, user-safe method that yields highly accurate counts and classification. AxleLight is a portable, infrared, ranging laser that is mounted close to the ground on one side of the roadway. It detects the number of axles on vehicles and transmits the information to Quixote Traffic’s Automatic Data Recorder (ADR) without anything tangible stretching across or installed in the roadway. The sensor allows users to perform challenging traffic studies without venturing into or crossing a hazardous roadway to install road tubes or reflectors. A single sensor can be configured by field personnel to detect axles in up to four lanes. By using two sensors spaced six feet apart in an AxleLight Classification Kit, users can perform complex FHWA vehicle classification studies, all without the need of a laptop or PDA. The sensor is battery-powered and is provided with a separate battery box containing either a 3.6 volt or 12 volt power source capable of powering the laser for up to 72 hours. An optional battery is available for longer studies up to 7 days.
