Greenbrier Valley Airport busy with golf traffic
Posted: July 30th, 2010

MAXWELTON - Greenbrier Valley Airport manager Jerry O'Sullivan predicts bigger and better things ahead for his facility.

"The charter jet traffic has been heavy since Sunday, and practically every one of our four daily commercial flights has been full," O'Sullivan said Tuesday afternoon.

While much of this week's increased traffic can be attributed to The Greenbrier Classic PGA Tour event, O'Sullivan said he has seen a real difference since The Greenbrier's Casino Club opened earlier this month.

"There was just a huge impact from the casino. We're almost getting used to it now," he said. "We now have more part-time workers at the airport to take care of the people coming in and to handle the fueling needs of the aircraft."

Sunday night's influx of charter jets carried mostly professional golfers, along with their families and caddies, O'Sullivan said.

"About 120 people came in Sunday just after midnight," he said. "There were three buses waiting to carry them to The Greenbrier and other local lodging establishments. All told, we had about 15 to 20 vehicles waiting on the apron. I'd say we were at it until 1:30 in the morning."
