"Customer service is a big part of our business," Gauger said, adding that Jet West has a number of marketing efforts.

Though Jet West hopes to draw business away from Monterey, there is cooperation between the airports and charter services.

Jet West can fly out of Monterey if a customer prefers, and when Monterey is full during big events such as the U.S. Open or Concours d'Elegance, Salinas can take the spillover.

There is another advantage Salinas has always had over Monterey less fog. When fog prevents planes from landing in Monterey, Salinas is the closest alternative.
