Airport Authority approved for takeoff

Fort McMurray -- The Alberta government is taking another step to support the continued growth in the oil sands and meet the increased demand for air travel with the incorporation of the Fort McMurray Airport Authority.

'The Fort McMurray Airport provides an essential service to a growing region that contributes significantly to Alberta's economy,' said Premier Ed Stelmach. 'The new authority will have greater flexibility to meet the needs of residents and to take advantage of expansion opportunities that support economic growth in the region.'

'The creation of the Fort McMurray Airport Authority is an important step in meeting the growing demand for air travel to the region,' said Luke Ouellette, Minister of Transportation. 'Supporting enhanced air travel across Alberta is part of my mandate as Transportation Minister.'

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and the Fort McMurray Regional Airport Commission applied to the government to incorporate the Fort McMurray Airport Authority under the Regional Airports Authorities Act. Fort McMurray will join the cities of Edmonton, Calgary and Red Deer as the province's fourth airport authority.

'The Fort McMurray Airport Authority will improve our region's ability to build and respond to our growing needs,' said Melissa Blake, Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Mayor. 'I am excited to be part of this announcement and what it means for the residents of Wood Buffalo.'

The creation of the airport authority supports the Government of Alberta's plan for a strong economic recovery. The Way Forward will bring Alberta back into a surplus position in three years by trimming government spending; using cash reserves to protect key programs; continuing to invest in public infrastructure; and ensuring that our province's industries are competitive and continue to attract investment to provide jobs and prosperity.
