Eclipse Aviation on Friday raised the price of its much-ballyhooed Eclipse 500 to $2.15 million, more than double what it was when unveiled eight years ago.
For customers still wanting a less expensive jet, the company also announced it would offer a $1.35 million jet, the Eclipse 400.
The larger jet seats six and has twin engines; the smaller jet seats four and has a single engine. Originally, the Eclipse 500 was priced at less than $1 million, but the cost has since increased several times.
The company said in a news release Friday that higher-than-expected manufacturing costs and a slower-than-anticipated production rate for the Eclipse 500 jet necessitated the price increase from the most recent price of $1.6 million. The announcement was issued during an invitation-only customer event to celebrate Eclipse's 10th anniversary.
Though original projections called for the company to have delivered more than 1,000 jets to customers by now, actual deliveries reached 200 this week.
Eclipse spokeswoman Alana McCarraher said the price increase would be effective immediately and would affect any customer who has made an initial deposit, but who hasn't paid the company's required 60 percent "production deposit." That is typically paid when an aircraft is about six months from delivery. Some customers are still years away from delivery.
